Known Issue: Critical Internal Sensor Damage Error

How to handle tickets where the “Critical Internal Sensor Damage” message appears

Symptom:

  • “Critical Internal Sensor Damage” message
  • The drone is completely blocked from a flight and can only be unblocked through a hidden parameter in WingtraMode

Explanation:

  • Before v1.10.1, this message and flight prevention measure was not there, and the underlying issue has led to dangerous crashes. For firmware, before v1.12 if a flight critical sensor detects an error 1 time the plane becomes blocked to prevent the plane from taking off and crashing if the error happened in-flight. The "Critical Sensor Damage" error can be different depending on what sensor malfunctions.

Occurrences:

  • 3x crashed before v1.10.1
  • 10x blocked planes since v1.10.1. There are clearly 2 different problems:
    • 6x baro sensor problem (GH issue)
      • 1444, 1520, 1425, 1669, 1348
      • The baro issue will be fixed on v1.12 because there will be a failsafe programmed so if the error happened in flight it will not crash.  It will also take 3-5 times for the error to happen before the plane is blocked
      • One of the leading causes for this issue is a broken smart battery cable
      • Image 8-1
      • If the customer can confirm damage to cable it is safe to unblock plane and swap the smart battery cable
      • If the error is still present on v1.12 please consult with dev for further instruction
    • 4x accel/gyro problems
      • If the error is the whole IMU accel + gyro then it will still be blocked therefore a wing swap is needed
      • If only the gyro or only accelerometer fails on firmware v1.12 this error will get blocked after the error is detected 5 times
      • → Hopefully, the issue is fixed with new electronics. Dev team is still looking into a fix for the current electronics setup.  For now, ask dev if it is safe to unblock plane or if there have been any new developments in a solution

Support recommendations:

  • Consult a dev (Michal) or (Sebi) to confirm whether the plane is actually unsafe to fly.  They will identify possible troubleshooting tips and which sensor is failing
  • Depending on error the plane can be unblocked, battery cable replaced, or the plane will need to be replaced if whole IMU fails or multiple blocking occur

    Dev needs for investigation:

    • Pixracer logs direct from autopilot
    • Pictures of battery cables
    • Ship back the physical pixracer only to Zurich
