Known issue: Crash due to failing BEC in cold conditions (plane ID < 1460)

Until February 2019, a flight-critical component (power converter BEC) was built into WingtraOne, that can lead to a crash in cold conditions.

Although being rated down to -40 degree Celsius, one of the power converters in our planes can fail on first time usage in cold conditions during flight. Risk of occurance has been accessed, and been considered low enough to not take proactive steps (recall, ...). For details, check out this summary.

Facts

  • Above plane ID 1460, all drones are sane. Also below there are some sane drones. To check a specific drone, have a look at column B of the plane details sheet.
  • Below plane ID 1460, ~97% of all drones are sane down to -10 degree Celsius.
  • All drones are sane down to the "coldest flight they did so far"

Proactive communication for actual cases in the past (RDO - Topa 3D and Idaho Forest Group)

We want to share transparently the insights, share the risk assessment, and convince them that we do not want to do anything proactively. i.e.

  • For some months last year, a component (power step-down converter, BEC) was built into WingtraOne that has a small risk of failing in low temperature (below 0 degree Celsius).
  • The risk has been assessed and chance of an additional failure is very low. Given the numbers and current fleet situation, we do expect none or one more similar failure globally.
  • The issue has been sustainably solved for all fulfillments since February 2019.
  • The failure is consistent, i.e. the BEC is either sane or faulty from a certain temperature downwards. This means all drones that flew already in cold conditions are sane.

Communication for new upcoming cases

Check always if the flight has been performed outside temperature range. Do not fast-conclude that a crash happened due to BEC - there is many possible explanations that can lead to similar crashes!
