Known issue: GPS signal jamming or spoofing

This article describes what is GPS jamming and spoofing and how to recognize such cases

In some parts of the world, the GPS signal is jammed and one of the consequences is the inability to fly UAVs in that area. Although WingtraOne has a failsafe scenario that triggers emergency landing in case the GPS fix is lost, these situations can potentially be dangerous and lead to a drone crashing.

GPS signal spoofing means that an artificial signal is emitted and the drone will calculate its position wrong which can lead to uncontrolled behavior.

Both jamming and spoofing are more likely to happen in politically unstable areas with increased military activity. See the image below.

In case a customer reports frequent GPS signal losses and weird drone behavior please ask them for the flight logs and assign Sebastian Verling as a Ticket owner engineering.

Also, please ask customers if they are aware of any military activity or military objects in the region they are flying. Since the final responsibility for flying is always with the operator, we should raise the awareness that the operator needs to make sure that the airspace is safe to fly before starting a mission.
