Differences between v2 and v3 units

The articles explain the main changes between the two versions of WingtraOne.

We never communicate to the resellers and customers drone versions (v2, v3). We can distinguish between different versions checking how many smart battery interfaces exist on the drone.

Changes visible to customers and distributors

  • Telemetry / data link harmonized to 2.4 GHz. All v3 drones come with 2.4 GHz telemetry. There is no possibility to choose 868 or 900 MHz telemetry with v3. The performance of 2.4 GHz telemetry is more reliable at ranges up to 4 km and decent to higher ranges.
  • Dual battery interface with two battery data cable connectors on the drone. All the batteries are shipped now with 2 data cables. However, only in v3 units, there is a readout port on the drone. For the v2 units, the purpose of the data cable in both batteries is so that the status of both batteries is checked.

Changes visible to distributors

  • Drivetrain (motor, ESC): All v3 drivetrains provide status feedback (parameters like RPM and temperature) to the flight controller, which allows detection of issues.
The drivetrain consists of a motor, a motor mount, an electronic speed controller (ESC) and connectors (power + signal) to the plane. The ESC of v3 units, is a custom build ESC. Only the motors are identical between v2 and v3 drivetrains.

  • Adapted ESC cover (plastic cover closing up a hole into the wing)

  • Main control unit: unified electronics onto a single board in the electronics compartment

Changes internally (not visible to customer or distributors)

  • Power Distribution Board (PCB): larger board with proper connectors and additional connectivity replacing the smaller v2 PCB
(not actually visible - showing PCB and location where it is located overlaid)
    v3_pcb
  • Associated with the PCBs, cabling on the drone connecting different components is also changed
  • Servo current feedback: current consumption is measured and helps to detect servo failures
  • More powerful 32bit microcontroller for more accurate control of motor timing reduces the risk of actuator failure in-air
  • Integrated vibration resistant capacitors onto the PCB eliminate the risk of capacitors breaking off and tumbling around in wing

Compatibility of replaceable components between v2 and v3

Full compatibility:

  • cameras
  • PPK module
  • batteries
  • middle stands / side stands

No compatibility:

  • e-cover

The upgrade of v2 to v3 drones is not possible as the change of glued-in components cannot be retrofitted and there is no option to swap out full electronics in case of a problem.

Compatibility of drivetrains

V3 drivetrains are compatible with v2 drones but v2 drivetrains are not compatible with v3 drones. A v3 drone can also fly with a v2 and a v3 drivetrain, but it is recommended to replace both of them.

An additional adapter cable (power + signal) and a new ESC cover are required to make the v3 drivetrain compatible with the v2 drone (part of the standard replacement bundles sent out).
